The Story Behind the Book

When I first met Duane, he was homeless with disabilities after serving his country as a U.S. Army veteran. Despite everything he'd been through, one thing was immediately obvious. He was an incredibly talented poet.

I'll never forget sitting down with him for a meal at Luby's. As we talked, he reached into his backpack and started pulling out books filled with poetry he'd written over the years. I sat there thinking, "I might be able to help him publish his book."

After sharing Duane's story with my followers, several people came together to help pay for a hotel room for him for a week. Once his hotel stay was over, he stayed with me for a couple of days while he transitioned into temporary housing.

During that time, I sat down with him and typed up and edited his first poetry collection. It was exciting to watch him see his work come to life and talk about his dream of one day becoming a bestselling author.

Life happened, and I faced some major challenges of my own that delayed the process. But I never forgot about Duane or the promise I made to help him publish his book.

Today, we're finally here. Poetry by the Lake is the very first book Duane has ever published.

Duane has always dreamed of seeing his poetry in print and sharing his story with the world. I'm genuinely happy to be able to help him take the first step toward fulfilling that dream and walking in his purpose.
